The Hunter’s Moon, 2026
The full moon comes on the night of Sunday, October 25. It is exactly full at 12:12 AM Eastern (Mon Oct 26), and in Columbus, Ohio it rises at 6:04 PM.
What the old folks said
The full moon after the harvest. The fields were bare, and by its light hunters could see the deer and foxes crossing them.
Coming up this month
🌑 New moon, Sunday, November 8
The darkest nights of the month - best for the stars.
☄ The Leonids, the night of Tuesday, November 17
About 15 an hour. The moon is 57% lit that night.
🌕 Next full moon: the Beaver Moon, the night of Monday, November 23
The next letter comes a few days before it.
Hunting and fishing
By the old solunar rule, the best days are around the full and new moon: Sat Oct 24 to Mon Oct 26 and Sat Nov 7 to Mon Nov 9.
Planting by the moon
From the full moon to the new moon (Sun Nov 8), the moon is getting smaller - the time for root crops: potatoes, carrots, onions, and for pulling weeds. After the new moon it fills again - the time for anything that grows above the ground.
The most fruitful days, when the moon rides in a water sign: for roots, Fri Oct 30 to Sat Oct 31 and Sun Nov 8; for what grows above ground, Mon Nov 9 and Wed Nov 18 to Thu Nov 19.
Just for fun
Lucky number this moon: 9 (the old way - add up the digits of the date until one is left). Lucky colour: gold, for luck.
